The sugarcane was on fire again, and Rhett stood in its center. Around him, flames licked high into the night sky and the sweet smell of burning cane filled his lungs. There was nowhere to go. The inferno surrounded him, closed him in. Through the flicker of the flames, he could make out the shape of the LeBeau House and a small figure standing on the porch.

He wanted to cry out for help. For someone, anyone, to put the blaze out and get him out of there. He felt the heat spit from the flames to his skin and burn deep into his flesh. He tried to form the words, but he couldn’t make a sound.

It was then that he could make out the figure on the porch.

It was him. The little boy he’d once been. Looking on in horror at what was out in the cane field.

He awoke in the darkness of his room. A long breath fogged in front of him.

Goddammit, he needed sleep. Every night, every fucking night, every time he tried to close his eyes he would suffer some nightmare or some crisis that needed to be dealt with.

Was it too much to ask for a single night of sleep? Had he not been through enough these past few days to justify just getting a good, long fucking sleep? Was he doomed to deal with both his own mind and the problems of others until he was a walking shell of deprivation? Rhiannon had finally shut up long enough to let him get some damn sleep, and now he was having nightmares.

He caught himself as the thoughts raked through his mind like nails. A deep disgust festered within at the things he was thinking, the poisoned thoughts of someone else. And yet, he couldn’t stop them, couldn’t push them away. It was like whatever had made him speak at the funeral was latched onto him, constantly pulling the darkest slivers of his being up to the surface for all to see. What the hell was wrong with him?

You know what’s wrong with you.

He shook the voice from his head and tried to focus on the surrounding blackness. It was only mid-afternoon. How were his curtains blocking out this much light? The room was pitch black.

What was the thing in the cane?

He lay in the dark, trying to organize and compartmentalize his thoughts as they warred with a new voice in his head. A voice familiar, yet alien. Sinister.

You know what’s wrong with you.

It was then he realized the sensation in his right hand. His fingers were curled in an embrace, and something pressed against his palm.

Someone’s cold fingers were holding his hand.

He looked quickly in the direction of whoever held his hand in the freezing dark. There, he made out the shape. The little figure. The one he thought he’d seen in the fun place. The small set of shoulders he knew he’d seen in his bedroom window. A silhouette within the blackness of the room.

“Go away,” Rhett said.
